Ask Carol B can help you understand what’s coming on the horizon or the timing for plan changes. Let us know your situation and we can help walk you through the process.
You’re going to receive a lot of Medicare information from multiple health insurance companies. For now, I suggest putting it all aside and using this time to understand your health care needs. That way, when you’re ready to review your options, you’ll have a better idea of what you’re looking for in a Medicare plan.
Signing up for the AskCarolB Newsletter is a good way to become familiar with Medicare.
Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older. You’re first eligible to sign up for Medicare 3 months before you turn 65. You may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).
Like getting an annual physical, it’s a good idea to understand your current health and compare your options. In life, change is constant. If you already have Medicare coverage, we highly recommend using this time to make sure the plan you are on is still working for you. And if it is, that’s the plan for you! But you won’t know until you do a review. And if it is not, we will guide you in an unbiased way to a new plan, whether it is Medicare Advantage, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan and /or a Prescription Drug Plan.
October 1 | Start comparing your current coverage with other options. You may be able to save money or get extra benefits. Visit Medicare.gov/plan-compare |
October 15 to December 7 | Change your Medicare health or drug coverage, if you decide to. This is changing to Original Medicare or Joining or changing a Medicare Advantage Plan. |
January 1 | New coverage begins if you made a change. If you kept your existing coverage and your plan's costs or benefits changed, those changes also start on this date. |
January 1 to March 31 | If you are in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare (and join a separate Medicare drug plan) once during this time. Any changes you make will be effective the first of the month after the plan gets your request. |
